Oral Histories as Curriculum: Bringing African American History into the K-12 Classroom

PANEL ON AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY EDUCATION
A panel of teachers and students will discuss their goals regarding the implementation and learning of African American History in their K-12 classroom. Discussion will focus on issues of content availability and accuracy; opportunities and barriers; and the current political climate surrounding the teaching of African American History in Florida schools.
NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES RESEARCH
Additionally, SPOHP and the faculty from the UF Department of Linguistics faculty will discuss their NEH funded research: ReAnimating African American Oral Histories of the Gulf South. This research talk will review the importance of African American Language (AAL) education and competence as part of the instruction of African American History, especially when utilizing oral histories as primary resources within the classroom learning experience.
