Film Premiere: “Oscar Mack versus the Ku Klux Klan”

April 12, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Join us to hear the story of one man who stood up to the Ku Klux Klan during Florida’s violent Jim Crow era. Black WWI Veteran Oscar Mack received a federal appointment as Postmaster in Kissimmee in 1922. Soon after an encounter with the police, he was reported dead by a lynch mob. But two days later, the Tampa Tribune reported that no trace of Mack was ever found. What happened to Oscar Mack? One hundred years later, interviews with his descendants reveal the true story.

Filmmaker Deborah Hendrix and her team use interviews with the descendants of Oscar Mack, and with the descendants of the white men that came after him, to reconstruct the astonishing series of events. The Life of Oscar Mack aims to reveal the truth and bring closure to everyone affected by the story.

Our event date has changed. It will now be held on April 12th at 5PM, in the MacKay Auditorium in Pugh Hall.

Refreshments will be served!
