Antisocial Media: How Facebook Disconnects Us and Undermines Democracy

Has Facebook and other social media fostered the deterioration of democratic culture around the world?
Join the Bob Graham Center on Monday, September 28 at 6:00 PM in-person at the Pugh Hall Ocora for a provocative discussion about Facebook’s evolution from an innocent social site hacked together by Harvard students into a force that challenges the institutions of democracy. We are pleased to host Dr. Siva Vaidhyanathan, a sought-out expert on media and cultural issues who has authored multiple books and articles, appeared in several documentary films and contributed frequently to network media outlets.
A former professional journalist, he holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Vaidhyanathan will talk about how and why Facebook’s mission has gone so wrong, fostering the deterioration of democratic culture around the world. Appropriate COVID protocols will be observed.
